SHILLONG : Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has announced that a major 4-lane road project connecting Polo to the New Shillong area and the upcoming Secretariat is in the pipeline, with discussions nearing completion.
According to the Chief Minister, the proposed road will begin from the CRPF camp in Polo, just after the bridge, and pass through forest areas including parts of the Mylliem Forest Reserve, eventually connecting to Mawpat and the new Secretariat complex.
“There are multiple roads under construction, but the major one is the 4-lane road from Polo which will connect all the way to Mawpat and the Secretariat,” Sangma said.
He informed that extensive consultations have been held with all stakeholders, including government agencies, traditional institutions, and private landowners.
“We have had multiple rounds of discussions at different levels—with individuals who own land, with the Hima Mylliem, and even with institutions like the police school in Golf Link,” he stated.
Sangma added that the process is now in its final stage, with only minor issues left to be resolved.
“We have almost closed discussions with everyone. Only one or two minor issues remain, and we are close to finalising the details,” he said.
Emphasising the importance of the project, the Chief Minister said the 4-lane road will significantly improve connectivity to the New Shillong township and the upcoming Secretariat.
“This will be a major connection and it will be a 4-lane road, not a 2-lane. It will greatly enhance overall connectivity to the new Secretariat and New Shillong area,” he added.
The project is expected to play a crucial role in easing traffic congestion and supporting the expansion of administrative infrastructure in the state.
