SHILLONG : The East Khasi Hills police collected fines amounting to approximately ₹1.5 lakh during a naka checking conducted at Laitumkhrah Police Point on Friday, as part of an intensified enforcement drive to ensure road safety in Shillong.
The operation witnessed a strong deployment of 30 traffic personnel along with 15 members of the Special Operations Team. The drive also received support from members of the Laitumkhrah Durbar, including Rangbah Shnong and Rangbah Dong, who urged authorities to continue such strict enforcement measures on a regular basis.
During the naka checking, police detected multiple violations, including several cases of drunk driving and vehicles fitted with illegal modifications, raising serious concerns over road safety compliance in the area.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Vivek Syiem, confirmed that fines totaling around ₹1.5 lakh were imposed during the operation. He further stated that strict action is being taken against all violators.
In a serious incident during the drive, a scooty rider allegedly attempted to evade checking and endangered the life of a police official. The rider reportedly tried to run over UBC SM Sangma while attempting to flee the naka point.
Police have initiated necessary legal action in connection with the incident.
The district police have reiterated their commitment to continue such enforcement drives across Shillong to ensure safer roads and stricter adherence to traffic rules.
