Shillong : Police in East Garo Hills have arrested a man for allegedly posting sexually explicit and vulgar content targeting women through social media platforms.
The accused, identified as Newbard M Sangma alias Betuel of A·chak Jangkigre in Williamnagar, was arrested after police found that he had allegedly uploaded obscene content using vulgar language against women through his Facebook account and YouTube channel.
According to police, the online content was publicly accessible and was found to violate provisions of the law relating to obscenity and cyber offences.
A case has been registered at Williamnagar Police Station under Sections 75(IV)(3) and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), read along with Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, 2000.
East Garo Hills Superintendent of Police SA Rynjah said the investigation was launched after authorities received inputs regarding the accused’s repeated online activities.
“The investigation was initiated after authorities received inputs that he had been habitually uploading vulgar content through his Facebook account and YouTube channel, which are accessible to the public,” the SP stated.
Police further said the recent uploads were reviewed and found to be obscene in nature, attracting relevant provisions under the BNS and the IT Act.
In an advisory issued following the arrest, East Garo Hills Police reminded the public that uploading, transmitting, or publishing sexually explicit content on social media platforms is a cognizable cyber offence under the Information Technology Act.
The police have also urged victims and affected persons to report such incidents through proper legal channels. Authorities stated that complaints related to online obscenity, cyber-blackmail, and child sexual abuse material (CSAM) can also be filed through the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP).
