Shillong : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday formally launched the 15-Mawlai Mandal, marking a major organisational expansion in the constituency as more than 30 political workers from different parties joined its ranks.
Speaking during the event, BJP spokesperson M Kharkrang said the formation of the Mandal is aimed at ensuring better implementation of Central government welfare schemes and addressing long-pending development issues in Mawlai.
“We are delighted to establish the Mawlai Mandal. Many of those who joined today had previously worked with other political parties but felt that important local issues remained unresolved. They believe Mawlai should receive the same developmental benefits as other constituencies,” Kharkrang said.
The newly constituted Mandal will be headed by Synsharlang Maiong, who said the decision to join the BJP was taken collectively after years of disappointment with previous political affiliations.
“We have worked with different parties for years but saw little positive outcome. Although several Central schemes are available, many deserving beneficiaries in Mawlai fail to receive them due to a lack of proper facilitation. We believe the BJP can help bridge this gap and ensure that welfare reaches those who need it most,” Maiong said.
He added that the move was made only after thorough discussions among the members.
Kharkrang stated that the Mandal’s immediate priority will be grassroots outreach by educating residents, particularly those in remote localities, about various Central government welfare schemes available for poor and low-income families.
“Our focus is not only on infrastructure like roads but also on schemes that directly benefit every household. The team will visit far-flung areas to ensure eligible beneficiaries are aware of and can access these programmes,” he said.
Rejecting suggestions that the move was linked to upcoming elections, Kharkrang maintained that the BJP’s objective is to accelerate development in Mawlai.
“This is about development, not elections. More than 30 members have joined today, and with the formation of the full-fledged 36-member Mandal, our next step will be to establish booth-level committees,” he added.
According to a BJP notification issued earlier this week, the 15-Mawlai Mandal will serve a 2026–2028 term. The committee comprises a President, three Vice-Presidents, two General Secretaries, three Secretaries, a Treasurer and 20 Executive Members.
