SHILLONG : Meghalaya has achieved its biggest-ever improvement in the Performance Grading Index (PGI), moving directly from Akanshi III to Akanshi I in the 2025-26 rankings released by the Ministry of Education.
Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui described the achievement as historic, stating that no state has ever climbed two grades in a single year since the PGI framework was introduced.
According to the minister, Meghalaya’s score has increased from 401.62 in 2022-23 to 525.71 in 2025-26, making it the fastest-improving state under the PGI framework with an overall improvement of 124.09 points (31 percent).
The state now joins 13 other states in the Akanshi I category, including Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir.
Rymbui attributed the success to major education reforms introduced since 2018 under the leadership of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma. These include the Structured Pay Framework for teachers, the Meghalaya Teachers Training Academy, school rationalisation, infrastructure development through Mission Education, Samagra Shiksha and ADB funding, and the CM IMPACT programme.
He said the government’s continued investment in education has helped improve learning outcomes, with the Secondary examination pass percentage now exceeding 90 percent.
While celebrating the achievement, the minister said the journey is far from over and assured that the government would continue working to further strengthen Meghalaya’s education sector.
