SHILLONG : The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Friday observed the 191st death anniversary of U Tirot Sing Syiem, renewing its commitment to oppose uranium mining in Meghalaya and urging the state government to take concrete action instead of relying solely on a resolution.
Addressing the gathering, KSU President Raymond Kharjana said the occasion should be more than a ceremonial tribute and called upon the younger generation to uphold the sacrifices made by Khasi leaders.
Welcoming the Meghalaya government’s proposed resolution opposing uranium mining in Domiasiat and adjoining villages, Kharjana said a resolution alone would not be enough to safeguard the interests of the indigenous people.
He alleged that influential individuals have recently been visiting Domiasiat to persuade residents to sell land and claimed there are plans to improve road connectivity to the mineral-rich area. He urged the government to investigate the reported land purchases and ensure that no attempt is made to revive uranium mining.
Describing uranium mining as a matter of survival for the Khasi community, Kharjana said the KSU remains committed to protecting the land, environment, and future of the people.
He also reiterated the Union’s long-standing demand for the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP), stating that effective laws are necessary to protect the identity and rights of indigenous communities.
Former KSU General Secretary Donald V. Thabah also addressed the gathering, claiming the Union possesses evidence of land being purchased in Domiasiat for mining-related purposes. While welcoming the government’s stand against uranium mining, he warned that the KSU would intensify its agitation if authorities fail to act against alleged attempts to revive the project.
The KSU said it will continue conducting awareness campaigns across the state and oppose any move that threatens Khasi land, identity, and the environment.
