SHILLONG : Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday announced a new government scheme to support religious and cultural infrastructure across Meghalaya while attending the Behdeinkhlam festival at Tuber in Jaiñtia Hills.
Making his second visit to the festival, the Chief Minister described the Tuber celebration as one of the largest Behdeinkhlam festivals in the region and said it reflects the unique cultural identity of Meghalaya.
“This is what makes us who we are. This is our culture and it is very important that we keep it alive,” Sangma said.
He noted that Behdeinkhlam, traditionally observed to ward off diseases and evil, continues to hold great significance today. He stressed the importance of ensuring that the rich cultural traditions are passed on to future generations through active community participation.
Announcing the new initiative, Sangma said the scheme will benefit Seinraij, Seng Khasi, Christian denominations and other religious organisations across the state.
Under the programme, the government will provide financial support for the development of museums, galleries and other infrastructure aimed at preserving and documenting Meghalaya’s history, traditions and cultural heritage.
The Chief Minister referred to a recent proposal by Presbyterian Church leaders to establish a museum in memory of Welsh missionary Thomas Jones and said similar support would also be extended to the Catholic Church and other faith-based organisations.
He further revealed that a proposal submitted by Seinraij Tuber for the construction of a gallery and museum at Tuber, estimated at ₹10 crore, would also be considered under the new scheme.
Sangma, however, clarified that allocations would be made under a comprehensive plan to ensure that all communities receive equitable support.
“The idea is to provide infrastructural support and ensure that our history and culture are properly preserved and documented,” he said.
