SHILLONG : Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday confirmed that the Meghalaya government will table a resolution on uranium mining during the upcoming Autumn Session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, which is scheduled to be held in August.
Speaking to reporters, the Chief Minister said the Assembly session must be convened before August 27, as the Constitution requires that no more than six months elapse between two sittings of the House.
“Yes, the resolution will be coming up in the upcoming session of the Assembly, which will be held in August. August 27 is the date before which the session has to be called. So, the six months period gets over on August 27. During the upcoming Autumn Session of the Assembly, that is when the resolution will come up,” Sangma said.
The proposed resolution on uranium mining comes amid continued public debate over the issue, with various organisations reiterating their opposition to uranium exploration and mining in Meghalaya.
The government is expected to place the resolution before the House during the August session for discussion and adoption.
