SHILLONG: Tension escalated outside the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on Wednesday as members of the Langrin Hima community, who had gathered to demand the removal of the incumbent Syiem, allegedly attempted to force their way through the council’s main gate.
The protesters had been waiting outside the KHADC premises for more than two hours, demanding that the council take action against Syiem Nangtei Syiemiong and initiate a fresh election to choose a new Syiem of Hima Langrin.
The situation turned tense when the protesters began shaking and attempting to break open the KHADC gate. Police personnel deployed outside the entrance tried to prevent the protesters from forcing their way inside, leading to a brief confrontation.
However, the situation was brought under control after the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the KHADC invited representatives of the protesting group for talks.
Following the invitation, the protesters stopped their attempt to break through the gate and proceeded to meet the council authorities to discuss their demands.
The protesters are seeking the removal of the incumbent Syiem and the holding of a fresh election, stating that their demands should be addressed by the KHADC.
The talks are expected to determine the next course of action as the protesters await the council’s response to their demands.
