JOWAI : NPP candidate for the Shillong Lok Sabha byelection, Dr DRL Nonglait, has expressed confidence in securing a “Distinction” from the 1-Nartiang constituency, while appealing to voters to support a candidate from the ruling side.
Speaking at a public election meeting at Ummulong Madan Khawang in West Jaintia Hills, Dr Nonglait compared the Lok Sabha election to an examination, saying the Shillong parliamentary seat comprises 36 Assembly constituencies, which he described as 36 “papers” in an examination.
“As a teacher, I used to evaluate examination papers. This MP election has 36 papers, and one of them is the 1-Nartiang paper. From 1-Nartiang, I expect to get a Distinction,” Dr Nonglait said.
He also expressed hope of receiving strong support from voters in the 2-Jowai constituency.
Dr Nonglait urged voters to elect an MP from the ruling side if they want Meghalaya’s key demands to be taken forward in Parliament.
He highlighted issues including the demand for the Khasi language to be included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution and the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya.
According to Dr Nonglait, the state needs stable governance, and the elected MP should work closely with the government to effectively raise the concerns and aspirations of the people in Parliament.
He argued that while major demands of Meghalaya may have support across political parties in the state, their implementation would depend on effective representation in Parliament.
Dr Nonglait further appealed to voters to consider the importance of electing an MP who can work with the government and help push forward issues concerning the state.
He expressed confidence that voters in the 1-Nartiang and 2-Jowai constituencies would extend strong support to his campaign in the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha byelection.
