RI-BHOI: A man lost his life after a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall buried the makeshift hut where he was staying in Umdap Rngi, Ri-Bhoi district.
The incident occurred following several days of heavy rain, which triggered landslides in several parts of Ri-Bhoi.
The man’s body was recovered by residents of Umdap Dumu and Umdap Rngi, along with personnel from the Byrnihat Police Outpost and Fire & Emergency Services, following a search operation that continued for several hours.
According to information gathered, the incident is suspected to have occurred on July 20, when heavy rainfall continued for several hours in the area.
The deceased was reportedly a resident of the Byrnihat area but had been staying at the location for several years for agricultural activities.
When he failed to return home, his brother went looking for him and found that the makeshift hut where he had been staying had been completely buried under earth from the landslide. He immediately informed the local authorities and the police.
Following the information, personnel from the Byrnihat Police Station, Fire & Emergency Services and local residents rushed to the site to search for the man.
The rescue team used shovels and other equipment to clear the mud and debris in an effort to locate him.
After around three to four hours of intensive search and rescue efforts, the man’s body was recovered at around 4 pm.
An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
