SHILLONG : The Meghalaya Government has launched the Meghalaya School Performance Grading Index (MSPGI) 2025-26, a new framework aimed at assessing the performance of all 11,443 recognised schools across the state.
Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui launched the initiative on Friday, describing it as a tool to help schools identify gaps and improve their overall performance.
The MSPGI is based on certified UDISE+ 2025-26 data and will evaluate schools on a total of 1,000 points across 43 indicators covering five key areas — Accessibility, Digital Education, Infrastructure, NEP Activities and Quality.
Under the new system, every school will receive an individual Report Card containing its score, grade and rank. Schools will be categorised into 17 grades, ranging from Utkarsh to Akanshi-10.
Officials said the framework mirrors the Centre’s national Performance Grading Index (PGI) but is being applied at the individual school level for the first time in the country.
Rymbui stressed that the objective of the MSPGI is not to criticise or shame schools but to help them understand their current position and identify areas that require improvement.
“The purpose is not to demean any school… it is to give them where they are standing so they can reflect and improve,” he said.
The minister also highlighted Meghalaya’s improvement in the state-level PGI. According to him, the state’s PGI score increased from 401.62 in 2022-23 to 525.71 in 2025-26, with Meghalaya moving from Akanshi-3 to Akanshi-1.
The Education Department said schools will be encouraged to use their report cards to prepare improvement plans in consultation with teachers and School Management Committees (SMCs).
At the district and block levels, officials will use the MSPGI data to identify areas requiring targeted support. Meanwhile, high-performing schools will be encouraged to serve as peer-learning models for other institutions.
Rymbui said the MSPGI, developed with SEMAM, will complement the existing school inspection system and provide data-driven inputs to strengthen Meghalaya’s performance in the national PGI in the future.
