SHILLONG : The Meghalaya Government Drivers’ Welfare Association has urged the state government to restrict the movement of official vehicles in vulnerable areas following attacks on government vehicles during the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) bike rally in Shillong on August 19.
In a letter addressed to the Chief Secretary, Association president C Syiemlieh said several government vehicles were damaged during the violence, with some reportedly set ablaze. He also said some government drivers suffered minor injuries while performing their duties.
The association urged the government to direct all departments to avoid unnecessary movement of official vehicles through sensitive areas until normalcy returns.
It further requested that government officers be allowed to use their private vehicles for routine official work during the period, while vehicles required for essential and emergency duties should continue to operate with adequate security arrangements.
The association said the temporary restriction was necessary to protect government drivers and vehicles amid concerns over their safety following the incidents during Wednesday’s rally.
The drivers’ body also reiterated its long-standing demand for the introduction of Risk Allowance for government drivers, pointing out that they frequently perform duties in potentially hazardous conditions without receiving any additional allowance for the risks involved.
The association said the safety and welfare of government drivers should be given priority, particularly during periods of unrest or heightened tension.
