NONGPOH : A large number of shopkeepers and residents across Nongpoh, Umsning, Bhoirymbong, Byrnihat and other parts of the Ri-Bhoi plains on Monday extended their support to the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) during the organisation’s outreach campaign on its five-point demands to the Meghalaya Government.
The KSU distributed leaflets highlighting its five key demands and sought to create awareness among the public about the issues raised by the organisation.
Several shopkeepers and residents expressed their support for the KSU, saying the issues raised by the organisation are important for the state, particularly for the younger generation and the future of Meghalaya.
Some women and local residents also expressed concern over what they described as the government’s action against its own people and the arrest of KSU members.
They also questioned the decision to shift arrested KSU leaders to jails in the Garo Hills.
Raising concerns over the transfer, some residents questioned whether the jail facilities in Shillong were so overcrowded that the KSU leaders had to be taken to the Garo Hills.
The expressions of support come amid heightened tensions between the KSU and the state government following the recent unrest in Shillong and the subsequent arrests of several KSU leaders.
