SHILLONG : The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on Tuesday held a hearing into the ongoing dispute involving the Majai Dorbar Shnong and the Hima Sohra over the removal of the village’s Acting Sordar.
The hearing was conducted by the KHADC through its Executive Member in charge of Elaka, Danzil R Chen, with representatives of both sides appearing before the Council to present their respective positions.
The dispute reportedly arose after the Acting Sordar of Majai Dorbar Shnong was removed from his position by the Acting Chief of Hima Sohra, with the matter reportedly linked to a White Paper.
Speaking to the media after the hearing, Majai Dorbar Shnong Secretary Daminot Sohtun said the village had been without a regular Sordar for more than a year following the suspension of the previous Sordar.
According to Sohtun, the Dorbar Shnong subsequently obtained approval from both the KHADC office and the Hima Sohra office to appoint an Acting Sordar to look after the affairs of the village.
However, he said the Hima Sohra office later issued a letter dated August 1, 2026, ordering the immediate removal of the Acting Sordar.
Sohtun questioned the basis of the decision, claiming that the letter did not specify any particular violation of law or rule committed by the Acting Sordar.
He said the Majai Dorbar Shnong also did not accept the reference to a White Paper as sufficient grounds for removing the Acting Sordar.
The matter was subsequently brought before the KHADC, leading to Tuesday’s hearing, where representatives of both the Majai Dorbar Shnong and Hima Sohra were given an opportunity to present their respective sides.
However, no final decision was communicated after the hearing.
Sohtun said the Minister of Hima Sohra sought additional time in connection with the matter. As a result, the Majai Dorbar Shnong representatives left the hearing without receiving a final decision from the Council.
The dispute is now expected to come up again before the concerned authorities after the additional time sought by the Hima Sohra side.
