NONGPOH : A youth from Eastern West Khasi Hills was held by police after a substance suspected to be heroin was recovered from his possession at the Pahammawleiñ Toll Gate along the National Highway.
The youth, identified as David Marweiñ from Wahumlalong, was reportedly stopped at around 12:50 pm after toll gate workers noticed that he had sustained injuries while travelling on a scooter bearing registration number ML 05 AH 7002.
The toll gate workers initially approached him to offer assistance. However, during their interaction with the youth, they reportedly became suspicious about possible drug-related activities. The youth allegedly told them that he had travelled to the Jorabat area to purchase drugs.
The matter was subsequently reported to the Superintendent of Police, Ri-Bhoi, following which a team from Byrnihat Police Station reached the spot and began an inquiry in the presence of witnesses.
After obtaining the required permission and explaining the procedure to the witnesses, police conducted a search in accordance with provisions of the NDPS Act.
During the search, police allegedly recovered a soap box containing a powder-like substance suspected to be heroin. A test was conducted at the spot, following which the substance was weighed and found to be approximately 9.77 grams.
Police have initiated further investigation to establish the source of the suspected contraband and identify any other persons who may be connected with its procurement, transportation or alleged drug trade.
The substance has been described as suspected heroin, pending further legal and forensic proceedings.
