SHILLONG: From growing up in an orphanage to travelling alone through some of the most remote and difficult terrains of Meghalaya, Lunavath Pavan is turning his motorcycle journey into a story of resilience, exploration and human connection.
Pavan, a researcher, Hebrew specialist and solo traveller from Telangana, is currently travelling through Meghalaya on a self-sustained motorcycle expedition, taking him far beyond the usual tourist destinations and into remote villages across the Garo, Khasi and Jaintia Hills.
His journey has taken him through difficult roads, landslide-prone stretches, rocky tracks and areas with little or no mobile connectivity. Despite these challenges, Pavan has continued travelling from one village to another, often relying on local communities when faced with unexpected difficulties.
For Pavan, the challenges of travelling through remote areas are closely connected to the experiences of his childhood.
He says growing up in an orphanage taught him to depend on his own determination and face difficult situations without giving up. When his motorcycle breaks down or a road is blocked, he considers it another challenge that can be overcome by continuing to move forward.
LIVING WITH VILLAGE COMMUNITIES
Rather than following conventional tourist routes, Pavan has chosen to spend time in villages and experience everyday life alongside local communities.
During his journey, he has explored Meghalaya’s traditional way of life, including its unique matrilineal social structure, community-based living and close relationship with nature.
He has also experienced traditional food and visited areas where communities continue to preserve their natural surroundings, including sacred groves.
Pavan has been documenting these experiences through his YouTube channel, The Lunavath Pavan, giving viewers outside Meghalaya a glimpse of life in some of the state’s lesser-known villages.
He has particularly highlighted the hospitality of rural communities, the cleanliness of villages and the warmth with which local people receive travellers.
According to Pavan, his interactions with villagers have been among the most memorable parts of his journey.
A JOURNEY OF RESILIENCE
Pavan’s journey is also connected to his own personal story.
Having grown up in an orphanage, he wants his experience to encourage young people, particularly those from difficult or disadvantaged backgrounds, to believe that their circumstances do not have to determine how far they can go in life.
His motorcycle expedition is therefore not simply about covering distance. It is also an attempt to explore unfamiliar places, meet people from different communities and share their stories with a wider audience.
Pavan is now preparing for the next phase of his journey through the higher and more remote areas of the Jaintia Hills.
As he continues riding through Meghalaya’s challenging terrain, his journey is bringing attention not only to the state’s landscapes, but also to the people and communities living far away from its better-known tourist destinations.
