SHILLONG : Meghalaya BJP president Rikman G Momin on Wednesday said the party has not yet decided whether to demand an additional cabinet berth in the state government, adding that the issue would be discussed after meeting its legislators.

Momin said the BJP respects Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma’s prerogative in the recent cabinet reshuffle and would discuss the possibility of seeking more representation in the cabinet after consulting its MLAs.

The reshuffle followed the resignation of UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh as a cabinet minister and the re-induction of West Shillong MLA Paul Lyngdoh, who, along with two former UDP MLAs, merged with the NPP.

Asked whether the BJP would push for an additional cabinet berth following the reshuffle, Momin said the party had accepted the Chief Minister’s decision and was yet to consult its legislators.

“What happened the day before yesterday, it is okay. We accept whatever is the prerogative of the Chief Minister. Till now we haven’t met our legislators. After meeting them only I can tell you and brief you,” he said.

When asked whether the party was disappointed with the cabinet reshuffle, Momin said discussions with the Chief Minister would continue.

“We will ask the Chief Minister. We will be in touch with the Chief Minister,” he said.

On whether the BJP would formally demand more cabinet berths, he said the matter would be discussed with the Chief Minister.

Responding to reports that the newly joined MLAs were unhappy over not being inducted into the cabinet and had asked him to raise the matter with the party’s central leadership, Momin said he had not yet met the legislators.

“We haven’t met the legislators. We will be meeting very soon and after that only we will brief you,” he said.

Asked whether the BJP was hopeful of securing another cabinet berth, Momin said the decision would depend on the prevailing political situation.

“That will depend on the political situation,” he added.
