SHILLONG : The National People’s Party (NPP) has further strengthened its position in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) after three MDCs and two other prominent figures joined the ruling party on Wednesday.

Williamnagar MDC Alphonsush R Marak and Kharkutta MDC Cherak Watre Momin, both Executive Members of the GHADC representing the Trinamool Congress (TMC), joined the NPP along with BRDA chairman Rakesh A Sangma and retired Meghalaya Civil Service officer Pius D Sangma at a joining programme in Shillong.

The programme was attended by Chief Minister and NPP national president Conrad K Sangma, state president Prestone Tynsong and national vice president Sniawbhalang Dhar.

Speaking on the issue of ticket allocation for the upcoming GHADC elections, Conrad K Sangma said the party had not imposed any conditions on the newly joined members and that decisions would be taken collectively after assessing the political situation.

He said the party would consider its overall interests and work towards a unanimous decision that would bring all leaders together.

Sangma expressed confidence that the entry of the new leaders would strengthen the party and positively influence its prospects in the upcoming elections.

Highlighting the delimitation exercise, Deputy Chief Minister and NPP state president Prestone Tynsong described the preparation of electoral rolls for the newly proposed constituencies across Garo Hills as a major achievement.

“Electoral Roll of the newly proposed constituencies in the entire Garo Hills, so this is the biggest achievement I should say that the party has done for the interest of Garo Hills region, nobody else could do it, no other political party who could do that,” he said.

NPP national vice president Sniawbhalang Dhar welcomed the new entrants, pointing out that the party had recently inducted three MLAs from different political parties and had now received three MDCs.

“In the last week we welcomed 3 MLAs from different political parties and today again received 3 MDCs, it seems 3 numbers is lucky for the NPP,” Dhar said.

He expressed confidence that the latest additions would strengthen the party’s organisation and improve its performance in the forthcoming GHADC elections.
