The president of the opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP), Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, has strongly condemned the alleged assassination threats issued by the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) against VPP leaders, asserting that the militant group has no authority to interfere in democratic governance.
Basaiawmoit’s remarks came a day after HNLC reportedly warned the VPP—currently in power at the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC)—over the alleged delay in issuing the Sanad to the Syiem of Hima Sohra.
In a video statement, the VPP chief expressed shock over the reported threats, stating that the party unequivocally condemns any attempt to intimidate its leaders.
“The people have given VPP the mandate to govern KHADC. HNLC has no right to interfere in our functioning. Only the electorate has the authority to question us if we fail to honour the promises we made,” Basaiawmoit said.
He pointed out that several discrepancies and irregularities have been observed in the administration of various himas, including Hima Sohra, and reiterated that VPP’s mission is to establish transparent and accountable governance at both the hima and state levels.
In a strong and emotional statement, Basaiawmoit said he is prepared to sacrifice his life for the welfare of the indigenous community.
“If HNLC assassinates me or any VPP leader, and if that brings peace, development, and benefits to the indigenous people, I am ready to be a sacrificial goat. However, HNLC must take full responsibility for any harm caused to our leaders,” he said.
The VPP president also announced that he would not seek government or police protection, stating that his faith in God is his only safeguard.
“I will not seek police or government protection. My life is in the hands of the God I serve,” Basaiawmoit said, quoting a biblical verse about walking through the valley of the shadow of death without fear.
Questioning the intentions of the banned outfit, Basaiawmoit asked whether HNLC seeks to revive monarchical rule or push for independence from India, urging the public not to be intimidated by threats.
“What exactly does HNLC want? Is it a return to kingship or separation from India? These are questions they must answer to the people,” he said.
Reaffirming the party’s resolve, Basaiawmoit stated that VPP leaders have faced threats and challenges in the past but will not deviate from their commitment to good governance and the welfare of future generations.
“Our only objective is to secure a better future for the indigenous community, and we will continue to walk the right path without fear,” he added.
