UMSNING : The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) North Khasi Hills District Unit, through its Organising Committee under the leadership of Organising Secretary Jester Nongbet, intercepted a suspected drug-trafficking vehicle allegedly using fake number plates during an operation carried out in Umsning on Wednesday morning.
According to the KSU, the operation was launched after the organisation received specific intelligence regarding a private vehicle suspected of transporting illegal drugs. The union alleged that the traffickers had used fake or incorrect registration number plates in an attempt to conceal the vehicle’s identity.
During the operation, KSU members laid an ambush and successfully intercepted the vehicle along with the individuals allegedly involved in the drug trafficking network.
The union further alleged that its preliminary findings indicate the involvement of people from outside the state working together with a few local Khasi youths, who were allegedly acting as carriers and suppliers of narcotic substances within Meghalaya.
KSU claimed that the accused had been using Umsning and the Ri-Bhoi district as a transit route to transport illegal drugs to other parts of the state.
Following the interception and preliminary questioning, the KSU handed over the suspects, the vehicle, and the seized items to the Umsning Police Station for further investigation and legal action.
The union has urged law enforcement agencies to take strict action against all those involved in the illegal drug trade, stating that such activities pose a serious threat to society and the future of the youth.
