SHILLONG : Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday said that ongoing border talks with Assam have been temporarily put on hold due to the upcoming elections in Assam.
Speaking to reporters, Sangma explained that the current political situation in Assam has made it difficult for the state government there to engage in discussions at this time.
“Elections are around the corner, so politically speaking, the current dispensation and the government in Assam are not in a position to engage right now,” the Chief Minister said.
The second phase of the Meghalaya–Assam border talks is aimed at resolving the remaining six disputed areas between the two neighbouring states. The discussions are expected to build upon the progress made in 2022, when both states signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to settle six of the twelve areas of dispute.
Reassuring that the process has not been abandoned, Sangma said the talks would resume once the electoral process in Assam is completed.
“Once the elections are over, then we will move forward again and continue the process,” he added.
