SHILLONG : The Meghalaya unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has received more than nine applications from party leaders seeking to contest the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha byelection, state BJP leader and Pynthorumkhrah MLA AL Hek said on Tuesday.
Hek said the Meghalaya BJP had invited applications from interested party leaders and had received over nine applications so far.
According to him, the names of the applicants have been forwarded to the BJP’s central leadership by the state party president for further consideration.
Asked when the BJP is likely to announce its candidate for the Shillong seat, Hek said the party’s national leadership is currently engaged in organisational matters, including appointments to key positions.
“They have a lot of work at the Centre. Once that is taken care of, they will take a call on the Shillong seat at the right time,” he said.
The Shillong Lok Sabha seat is set to witness a fresh electoral contest, with political parties expected to finalise their candidates ahead of the byelection.
