SHILLONG : The BJP Meghalaya on Saturday condemned the alleged insult to the Holy Bible by Sanjay Sharma and clarified that he currently holds no designation in the party.
In a statement, BJP Meghalaya chief spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang said the party was “deeply pained” by the alleged act and stressed that such behaviour goes against the party’s values.
“A distasteful incident of insulting the Holy Bible has recently come to light and BJP Meghalaya is deeply pained by the act of this individual named Sanjay Sharma,” Kharkrang said.
He said the BJP believes in “positive secularism and integral humanism”, adding that these principles are reflected in the conduct of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whom he said regularly attends Mass on Christmas Eve.
“Such irresponsible acts only discredit the party’s ingrained values and bring disrepute to our Prime Minister,” Kharkrang said.
He further said that people with “narrow, communal mindsets” have no place in the BJP.
“Insult to the Bible is as heinous an act as vandalising Swami Vivekananda’s statue,” he said.
The BJP Meghalaya urged the authorities to take punitive action against those responsible in accordance with the law.
Clarifying Sharma’s position in the party, Kharkrang said that Sanjay Sharma had already resigned from his post on May 8, 2026, and therefore currently holds no designation in the BJP.
However, he added that if Sharma continues to remain a primary member of the party, strict disciplinary action would be taken against him.
