Shillong :The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has expressed strong interest in contesting the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha byelection, with multiple aspirants already in the race for the party ticket.
Speaking to the media on Saturday, BJP chief spokesperson M Kharkrang said the party is keen to participate in the election, reiterating its intent to contest all polls.
“As a party, we would like to contest all elections. In earlier elections, including 2009 and 2024, we were prepared to contest but were directed to support our alliance partners,” Kharkrang stated.
He revealed that around five to six candidates are currently vying for the BJP ticket, and the party is now awaiting a final decision from its central leadership.
“We have approximately 5-6 aspiring candidates, and we are hopeful that the central leadership will decide in favour of contesting the election,” he said.
Kharkrang also expressed confidence that the BJP’s electoral performance would improve significantly if the party enters the fray.
“Once we contest the election, I am very confident that the BJP’s vote share will increase substantially this time,” he added.
The upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha byelection is expected to witness keen political activity, with major parties preparing their strategies to strengthen their presence in Meghalaya.
