SHILLONG : Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar on Tuesday stated that the proposed public rally by the opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) over issues including the Lumpongdeng Island project is part of its campaign strategy for the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha byelection.
Speaking to reporters, Dhar said that the VPP has already begun its election campaign, adding that the ruling side is also expected to start its campaign soon. He maintained that campaigning is a responsibility of every political party and using issues as part of election agendas is a matter left to individual parties.
Referring to the state government’s recent decision to exclude Lumpongdeng Island from the proposed Taj resort and spa project, Dhar said the government’s stand had already been clearly communicated and implemented accordingly.
When asked whether the VPP was targeting the ruling National People’s Party (NPP), Dhar dismissed the claim, reiterating that all political parties have the right to campaign and present issues before the public during elections.
On his earlier suggestion to shift the proposed 5-star hotel project at Umiam to Wahiajer if there was public opposition, Dhar said the government remains committed to development while also respecting public sentiment.
He added that the government has taken note of the concerns raised by the Synjuk Ki Rangbah Shnong of Ri Bhoi district and has acted accordingly to resolve the issue.
Dhar emphasised that while development is important, the government is willing to listen to the voices of the people and make necessary adjustments in the interest of the public.
