SHILLONG : The Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF), South East Sohra Circle, on January 13, 2026, met the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) seeking clarification over the trading licence allegedly obtained by an Assam-based security agency operating at NIT Sohra.
The issue pertains to North East Security Service, a security agency based in the state of Assam, which has been engaged to provide security guards at the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Sohra. The HNYF raised concerns over the legality of the agency’s trading licence to operate within the Khasi Hills region.
Following the meeting, the HNYF stated that the clarification provided by the CEM revealed serious irregularities. According to the CEM, the trading licence held by the agency is valid only outside Meghalaya. However, the operations being carried out at Sohra were allegedly done without proper authorization from the KHADC.
The CEM reportedly informed the delegation that the agency had “illegally managed” its operations in Sohra without obtaining the required trading licence from the district council, which is mandatory for any firm operating within its jurisdiction.
Further, the CEM also informed the HNYF that the certificate reportedly issued by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the security agency and submitted to the organisation was allegedly false and misleading.
Expressing concern over the matter, the HNYF demanded strict action against the agency for violating the rules and regulations of the KHADC. The organisation stressed that local laws must be respected and that no outside agency should be allowed to operate in Khasi Hills without proper documentation and approval.
The HNYF further urged the KHADC authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and take necessary steps to ensure that such irregularities are not repeated in the future, especially in sensitive institutions like NIT Sohra.
