NONGPOH : A tragic road accident claimed the life of a 65-year-old man after a jeep plunged into a gorge at Makoibari village under Mawdiangum in Ri-Bhoi district on Monday afternoon.
According to sources, the incident occurred around 1:20 PM when a Jeep bearing registration number ML-10-1027, driven by Bah Rymphangsngi Blah, a resident of Saiden village, Ri-Bhoi district, was heading from Makoibari towards the main road at Mawdiangum.
Reports indicate that the vehicle suddenly stalled while negotiating the route. The driver attempted to control and save the jeep by changing gears, but lost control, causing the vehicle to plunge into a deep gorge. The impact left the driver critically injured.
Soon after the incident, personnel from the Nongpoh Traffic Police rushed to the spot and shifted the injured man to Bethany Hospital, Nongpoh for treatment. However, doctors declared him brought dead, stating that he had succumbed to severe injuries sustained in the accident before reaching the hospital.
Family members of the deceased requested that the post-mortem examination be waived. After completing all legal formalities, the police handed over the body to the family for last rites.
