JOWAI : Members of the Western Zone of the Jaiñtia National Council (JNC) on Thursday locked the Airtel office at Ladthalaboh, Jowai, protesting the company’s alleged failure to improve mobile network connectivity in the region despite earlier assurances.
Led by Western Zone President Hamehi Bamon, the protest followed what the organisation described as Airtel’s failure to honour a commitment made during a meeting held on January 28, where company officials had assured that a network tower would be installed at Sabah Muswang within three to four months after identifying a suitable location.
The JNC said poor network connectivity continues to affect residents, with Woodland Hospital at Sabah Muswang being one of the worst-hit areas, raising concerns over communication during medical emergencies.
According to the organisation, more than five months have passed without any visible progress, while repeated follow-ups with Airtel officials have yielded only vague assurances and no definite timeline for the project.
Describing the company’s response as unsatisfactory, the JNC locked the office to pressure Airtel into taking immediate action and fulfilling its commitment.
The organisation warned that it would intensify its agitation if the telecom company fails to respond promptly, stressing that reliable mobile connectivity is vital for residents and essential services, particularly healthcare.
