Shillong : The Jaiñtia Students’ Union (JSU) has extended its full support to the residents of Elaka Nongkhlieh, urging them not to give in to fear following reports of intimidation by alleged mafias operating in the area.
JSU General Secretary Neilkee Mukhim said the Union recently held a meeting with farmers, landowners and other residents of Elaka Nongkhlieh before issuing the appeal.
“After a meeting with the residents of Elaka Nongkhlieh, including farmers and landowners, we wish to appeal to the community, particularly the residents of Daistong, urging them not to succumb to fear or intimidation,” Mukhim said.
According to him, the Union was informed that many residents have been living under constant fear because of alleged threats from certain mafias.
“It has been brought to our attention that the residents of Elaka Nongkhlieh are living in fear due to the threats posed by certain mafias,” he said.
Mukhim stated that the JSU and the Jaiñtia National Council (JNC) are jointly calling on the people to remain united and safeguard their legitimate rights.
“The JSU and JNC are calling on all individuals to unite and advocate for their rights. These rights are valid and well-established, and they are crucial for the future and daily sustenance of the community,” he said.
He also assured residents that both organisations would continue to stand beside them in their struggle.
“We will continue our efforts to support and motivate the people, and we urge them not to be afraid under any circumstances,” Mukhim added.
The Union further encouraged residents to spread awareness about their rights and remain confident that justice would ultimately prevail.
“They also urged the residents of Elaka Nongkhlieh to raise awareness that even if the government exerts its authority, justice for their rights will eventually prevail,” he said.
