Delhi : The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Delhi Unit has rescued two young women from Meghalaya after they were allegedly lured to Delhi with false promises of employment and later pressured into prostitution.
According to a statement issued by the KSU Delhi Unit, the two women from Barato, Meghalaya, contacted the organisation on May 31 seeking urgent assistance after finding themselves in a distressing situation in the national capital.
The women alleged that they had been brought to Delhi on the assurance that jobs would be arranged for them in a hotel. However, upon arriving in the city, they were allegedly pressured to engage in prostitution instead.
The victims further claimed that when they refused to comply, the woman who had brought them to Delhi demanded reimbursement of the travel expenses incurred on their behalf and confiscated their mobile phones. They also alleged that they were not allowed to leave until the money spent on their travel had been repaid.
Following the complaint, the KSU Delhi Unit immediately informed the Delhi Police. Acting swiftly, the police traced and detained the woman concerned for questioning.
During the inquiry, the woman denied all allegations. She reportedly stated that the two women had voluntarily travelled to Delhi in search of employment and that she had merely assisted them by paying for their travel expenses. She also denied any involvement in forcing or attempting to force them into prostitution.
After police intervention, the mobile phones were returned to the women. The victims were subsequently handed over to the care and custody of the KSU Delhi Unit, where they are currently being sheltered.
The union informed that arrangements have already been made for their safe return to Meghalaya. Family members of one of the women have sent the necessary funds for her airfare, and she is scheduled to return home shortly.
Reiterating its commitment to protecting students and youth from Meghalaya living outside the state, the KSU Delhi Unit urged job seekers to exercise caution before accepting employment offers from unknown individuals. The organisation also advised young people to verify the authenticity of job opportunities before travelling to other states.
