SHILLONG : The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Laban Circle on Tuesday shut down a place of worship at Lower Lumparing in Shillong, alleging that it was an illegally constructed mosque built without proper permissions.
According to KSU leaders, an inquiry conducted by the organisation revealed that the structure, identified as Lumparing Masjid, was erected without approval from the dorbar shnong or relevant authorities.
KSU Laban Circle leader Shiningstar Chyne stated that the mosque was constructed on land that reportedly has no clear ownership and without official authorization.
The Union further claimed that the site was originally designated for a chowkidar’s residence meant to oversee a nearby Muslim burial ground, but was later converted into a mosque.
During the operation, KSU members also asked the imam residing at the site to vacate the premises, alleging that he was staying there illegally and conducting religious activities.
As per the Union, the dorbar shnong of Lower Lumparing had earlier inspected the site following complaints and had resolved to dismantle the structure. However, no action was taken by those managing the mosque.
The KSU has now stated that it will soon file a formal complaint with the concerned authorities, demanding complete removal of the structure.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over land ownership, unauthorized construction, and regulatory enforcement in the area.
