SHILLONG : Tension was reported after representatives of residents from Hima Langrin blocked a main road following a disagreement with the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) over their demand to allow the public to enter the Council premises.
The development occurred after three representatives from the Hima Langrin group went to meet District Council Executive Member (EM) Powell Sohklet to discuss their demands.
According to the group, Sohklet asked them to send 10 representatives for discussions. However, only three representatives went ahead initially to place their demand before the Executive Committee (EC), including a request to allow members of the public to enter the Council premises.
The Council did not allow the public to enter the premises and instead urged the group to send 10 representatives for talks.
However, the representatives did not agree to the proposal.
Langrin group blocks main road
Following the disagreement, members of the group, along with their leaders, blocked the main road, disrupting the movement of vehicles and commuters.
Traffic police deployed in the area appealed to the protesters to clear the road and allow traffic to move freely.
However, the protesters reportedly refused to lift the blockade and continued to occupy the road.
The road blockade caused disruption to normal traffic movement and inconvenience to members of the public travelling through the area.
The standoff comes amid the Langrin residents’ ongoing demands before the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council, with the group seeking the Council’s intervention on issues concerning the Hima Langrin.
