SHILLONG : A ninth-semester law student, accompanied by members of the Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF), East Khasi Hills unit, filed a police complaint at Sadar Police Station on Tuesday against a senior lawyer from Assam, identified as A.H. Hazarika, alleging that she was assaulted during her internship.

According to the student, the alleged incident took place at around 3:16 PM while she was undertaking an internship under the senior lawyer.

Speaking to the media, the student alleged that the lawyer had asked her to accompany him to another room to collect two documents. She said that after the documents had been collected, the lawyer followed her and allegedly held her from behind and touched parts of her body without her consent.

The allegations are currently subject to police investigation, and the accused’s version of the incident was not immediately available.

The HNYF condemned the alleged incident and said it would not tolerate such behaviour. The organisation demanded that legal action be taken against the accused if the allegations are established.

The organisation also appealed to the relevant chamber association to take appropriate action and consider disciplinary measures, including cancellation of the lawyer’s licence, in accordance with applicable rules if the allegations are proven.

The matter is expected to be investigated by the police based on the complaint filed by the law student.
