SHILLONG : A man from Umrynjah, identified as Kyrshanborlang Thabah, was surprised after receiving notices from Jowai Police Station, Pasture Beat House and Sadar Police Station in connection with allegations of cheating people and demanding money.
Thabah said he was initially surprised to learn that complaints had been made against him. However, after approaching the police to find out the reason, he reportedly came to know that his mobile phone had been stolen and was allegedly being misused by others.
According to Thabah, the people using his stolen mobile phone had allegedly been contacting others to borrow money and demand payments.
He further claimed that some of the individuals had allegedly impersonated senior police officers while communicating with people over the phone.
Thabah said he subsequently approached Lumdiengjri Police Station and filed an FIR to report the theft and misuse of his mobile phone.
He stated that the phone had allegedly been stolen from him in Garikhana in May.
The incident has raised concerns over the misuse of stolen mobile phones and the potential use of another person’s identity and phone number to allegedly deceive or solicit money from members of the public.
