SHILLONG : Meghalaya’s preparations to host the 27th National Games in 2027 are progressing, with the Assembly’s Estimates Committee reviewing the state’s readiness amid challenges related to infrastructure, accommodation, transport and other logistics.
The committee, headed by Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem, on Monday held a meeting with officials of the Sports and Youth Affairs Department to take stock of the preparations for the national sporting event.
Syiem said the department briefed the committee on the overall preparedness of the state and the progress being made across different areas.
“We have reviewed the preparation for hosting the 27th National Games in Shillong in 2027. The Sports and Youth Affairs Department has enlightened the committee about the preparedness,” he said.
Infrastructure for the Games is being developed at multiple locations, including Shillong, Tura and Jowai, as well as parts of East Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi districts, where different sporting disciplines will be conducted.
Syiem said athletes are also being prepared, while the state is working on accommodation, transportation and other logistical arrangements required for hosting the Games.
“Athletes have been prepared and infrastructure has been prepared in various locations. Preparation with regard to accommodation, transport and all logistics issues is a challenge, but we are very optimistic after the briefing,” he said.
With around six months remaining before the event, the committee chairman expressed confidence that the pending works would be completed within the required timeframe.
The 27th National Games will feature 39 disciplines, with Meghalaya serving as the main host, while other Northeastern states will also host at least one discipline each.
Syiem said the event is expected to provide greater opportunities for young athletes from Meghalaya.
“We are optimistic that our young boys and girls will get proper avenues,” he said.
He added that the Chief Minister and Sports Minister are focused on ensuring that Meghalaya’s athletes receive proper diet, training and coaching, including support from coaches from within and outside the country.
The aim, he said, is to help the state’s athletes compete strongly and win medals at the National Games.
