SHILLONG : Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer Dr BDR Tiwari on Tuesday said the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) 2026 is progressing as scheduled, with the final electoral roll set to be published on October 21.
Tiwari reviewed the progress of the SIR during a virtual meeting with Deputy Commissioners, District Election Officers, Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) and representatives of political parties.
According to the CEO, 5,36,468 hearings have been completed out of 6,51,735 notices generated so far, representing 82.31 per cent of the total.
The draft electoral roll contains 21,69,243 electors. Notices were generated in cases involving 2,22,786 ‘No Mapping’ cases and 4,28,949 mapping discrepancies.
Of the total 6,46,397 notices that have been delivered, 5,190 remain pending.
Tiwari said 542 electors have so far been found ineligible following scrutiny, while directing election officials to ensure that every elector receives a fair opportunity to present their case.
He clarified that receiving a notice does not automatically mean that an elector’s name will be deleted from the electoral roll.
“Receipt of a notice does not mean automatic deletion from the Electoral Roll. It provides the elector an opportunity to clarify the issue and furnish supporting documents,” Tiwari said.
He added that no deletion will be made without following the prescribed due procedure.
On claims and objections, the CEO said the election authorities have received 17,061 applications so far. These include 9,343 applications for inclusion through Form 6, 1,076 applications for deletion through Form 7 and 6,642 applications for shifting and correction through Form 8.
Tiwari appealed to voters whose names do not appear in the draft electoral roll to submit their claims within the extended deadline of September 18.
The CEO also said 1,814 Booth Level Agents (BLAs) from six recognised political parties are assisting electors during the revision exercise.
The BLAs include 736 from the NPP, 393 from the BJP, 320 from the VPP, 186 from the INC, 121 from the UDP and 58 from the AITC.
“The objective of SIR is to prepare an accurate, inclusive and transparent Electoral Roll,” Tiwari said.
The final electoral roll is scheduled for publication on October 21, following completion of the claims, objections and verification process.
