Shillong : Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has assured that the state government is taking immediate action to contain the outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) and prevent its spread to other parts of the state.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Sangma said the government is closely monitoring the situation and implementing necessary measures through the concerned department.
“Basically, it has been a problem in the past also and we are monitoring the situation and we are taking immediate action on it,” the Chief Minister said.
He acknowledged concerns among farmers and the public over the recurring outbreak but emphasized that preventive steps are already underway.
“There are concerns of course and these concerns keep on happening from time to time, but the department is taking all possible measures and steps to ensure that this does not spread on a large scale,” Sangma stated.
According to the Chief Minister, only a limited number of cases have been detected so far. However, the government remains vigilant and is working to prevent the disease from affecting pig populations across Meghalaya.
“There are few cases but we will do our best to ensure that this does not spread throughout the state,” he added.
African Swine Fever is a highly contagious viral disease affecting pigs and wild boars. While it does not pose a threat to humans, it can cause severe economic losses to pig farmers due to high mortality rates among infected animals.
The Meghalaya government has urged livestock owners to remain alert and cooperate with veterinary authorities in reporting suspected cases.
