SHILLONG : The Meghalaya Government will not reconsider its position on the proposed Shillong ropeway project despite continued protests by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) demanding that the project be scrapped or shifted to another location, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said on Friday.

Responding to questions about the ongoing agitation against the project, Tynsong maintained that the government had already clarified its position and had nothing further to add to the matter.

He said Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh had explained the government’s stand on Thursday, including issues surrounding the establishment of the ropeway or cable car project.

“I have nothing more to say because yesterday the Minister of Tourism has already explained everything about the issue of establishment of the ropeway or cable car,” Tynsong said.

The Deputy Chief Minister further stated that experts from various government departments had conducted detailed surveys and research before the project was taken forward.

He said the government remained firm on the explanations and position it had already presented.

“We from the government side have already explained. Even the experts of different departments have already done the detailed survey and the research, so we therefore stick to what we have already stated yesterday,” he said.

His statement comes amid continued protests by the JAC Against Shillong Ropeway Project, which has been demanding cancellation of the project at Lum Shyllong and calling for it to be relocated elsewhere.

The protesters have raised concerns over environmental impact, the felling of trees, drinking water sources and the land lease agreement connected with the project.

Despite the growing agitation, the government has reiterated that it will maintain its existing position on the proposed ropeway.
