Meghalaya Tourism Minister Timothy D Shira on Tuesday announced that the state government is planning to install CCTV cameras at select tourist destinations to enhance visitor safety, especially in the wake of the recent murder incident in Sohra.
Stating that security has become a key concern, Shira said CCTV cameras will be installed wherever deemed necessary following proper assessment.
“We will take up installing CCTV cameras at places where we feel it is necessary,” the minister said, adding that the decision would be based on ground-level assessments.
He informed that tourism officers from all districts will be asked to submit reports identifying locations that require enhanced surveillance.
“We will call a meeting, discuss, and get assessment reports from tourism officers. Wherever they say it is necessary to install CCTV cameras, we will initiate the process,” Shira added.
The Tourism Minister also underlined the government’s focus on completing ongoing tourism projects before launching new initiatives.
“We have some projects which are yet to be completed, and we have to complete all projects that are ongoing or under implementation,” he said.
In addition, Shira revealed plans to develop block-level tourism across Meghalaya with the aim of creating employment opportunities for local youth and promoting tourism beyond major destinations.
The proposed block tourism model is expected to help decentralise tourism, encourage community participation, and boost local economies across rural and semi-urban areas.
