SHILLONG : The East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Vivek Syiem, on Saturday clarified that the man seen assaulting and threatening a Mahindra Maxx taxi driver in a widely circulated video is a civilian, not a police officer. A suo moto case has been registered in response to the incident.
βAn enquiry was conducted, and it is confirmed that the individual in the video is a civilian, not a policeman,β Syiem said.
The incident, which occurred on March 27 while the taxi was travelling from Sohra to Shillong, was widely shared on social media. The video showed the man slapping the driver, using abusive language, and threatening to use a gun and put him behind bars, which initially led to confusion and allegations that the assailant was in uniform.
Syiem emphasized that the East Khasi Hills Police remain committed to maintaining discipline among its personnel, upholding the rule of law, and, most importantly, protecting citizens. Legal action is expected to follow the suo moto case.
