SHILLONG, JAN 6: More than 1,600 lost or stolen mobile phones have been successfully traced and recovered in Meghalaya through the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) system, highlighting the growing effectiveness of the digital platform and improved coordination among concerned agencies.
According to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), as of January 6, a total of 5,914 mobile handsets have been reported lost or stolen on the CEIR portal in the state. Of these, 1,662 handsets have so far been traced and recovered.
The CEIR portal enables citizens to report lost or stolen mobile phones, assists authorities in tracking and recovering the devices, and helps prevent their misuse, thereby strengthening public safety and security.
Through the CEIR platform, users can block lost or stolen mobile phones to prevent misuse, track and recover devices once they reappear on any telecom network, and unblock recovered handsets seamlessly through the same portal.
Officials said the success of the CEIR system in Meghalaya has been made possible through active cooperation among Telecom Service Providers (TSPs), State Police authorities, and increasing public awareness about the digital services offered by the Department of Telecommunications.
The CEIR system not only safeguards consumer interests but also plays a crucial role in curbing mobile-related cybercrime, discouraging illegal handset trade, and enhancing national digital security.
Citizens have been urged to promptly report the loss or theft of their mobile handsets through the CEIR portal at www.ceir.gov.in.
The Department of Telecommunications reaffirmed its commitment to expanding digital public services and ensuring a safe, secure, and transparent telecom ecosystem for all citizens.
