SHILLONG : Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong on Thursday said the Director General of Police (DGP) has been directed to take a more proactive approach amid a series of arson incidents in Shillong.
The incidents have included miscreants allegedly hurling petrol bombs at government establishments, government vehicles and police stations in different parts of the city.
“That is being taken care of by the police and I have already instructed the DGP to be more proactive,” Tynsong said.
He also said concerned government offices have been directed to strengthen security by installing additional CCTV cameras wherever required.
“Not only that, even the concerned offices, I have already instructed them that you have to further strengthen the security by installing more CCTV properly in wherever the area is required, it has to be done,” he said.
Tynsong added that the police have also been asked to strengthen patrolling across Shillong to prevent further incidents.
On how long the situation could continue, the Deputy Chief Minister said criminal activities could occur at any time, while assuring the public that the government would take all possible measures to address the situation.
“You cannot say for how long, you see criminal activities happen every minute,” he said.
“Let me tell you one thing, we assure the public from the government side, whatever is possible we will do it and we will not tolerate this kind of criminal activity that happens every day,” Tynsong added.
He also issued a warning to those involved in such activities, saying that the law would take its course and justice would be delivered.
“I warn once again, those criminals, to stop criminalization and the law will follow them and justice has to be done,” he said.
Asked whether additional forces were required to deal with the situation, Tynsong said the existing police force was sufficient.
“Do we need that, for that, we don’t need. Our own police force as of today is good enough to handle the situation,” he said.
