RI-BHOI :Thousands of people gathered at Raid Marngar in Ri-Bhoi on Saturday to take part in the annual traditional ceremony known as Tongdohkha or Beh Huleng, a unique religious and cultural event celebrated once every year.The ritual was held at the sacred pond of Raid Marngar, where devotees offered prayers and gratitude to God, along with traditional sacrifices, seeking protection from diseases, calamities, and evil forces. The ceremony reflects deep-rooted beliefs and the strong cultural heritage of the local community.Before the fishing activity began, key religious rituals including prayers and offerings were performed. Following this, people enthusiastically entered the pond to catch fish, which forms an integral and symbolic part of the Tongdohkha festival.Speaking on the occasion, Paiem Richard Syiem, the Syiem of Raid Marngar, stated that the ritual is unique and exclusive to their Raid. He also explained that as per tradition, the Syiem must obtain permission from the Syiem of Hima Mylliem to collect market tax from Iew Mawlong, popularly known as Iew Nongpoh, as part of the preparations for the ceremony.He further added that after receiving permission, the Dorbar Raid undertakes the cleaning of the market and collects the annual tax to successfully organize the Tongdohkha festival.
