NONGPOH : The Ri-Bhoi District Congress Committee (RBDCC) on Monday staged a peaceful protest against the BJP-led central government’s move to rename the MGNREGA scheme as the Viksit Bharat–Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission Gramin (VB–G RAM-G) Act, 2025.
The protest was led by RBDCC President Bah Rocky Marweiñ, along with party members, who took to the streets holding placards demanding that the original name and structure of MGNREGA be retained. The demonstration was organised at the Indoor Stadium, Umlyngkdait.
Addressing the gathering, Congress leaders stated that MGNREGA has transformed rural India over the last 20 years, strengthening village infrastructure and providing livelihood security to millions of rural households. They alleged that the BJP government’s move to rename and restructure the scheme would dilute its original intent.
Following the protest, a delegation of the RBDCC also met the Deputy Commissioner of Ri-Bhoi district at his office and submitted a memorandum expressing strong opposition to the enactment and renaming of MGNREGA as the VB–G RAM-G Act, 2025.
The RBDCC urged the central government to withdraw the proposed legislation and preserve MGNREGA in its existing form for the welfare of rural communities.
