Shillong : United Democratic Party (UDP) leader and Khliehriat MLA Kyrmen Shylla on Monday dismissed concerns over the future of the Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA), asserting that the alliance between the UDP and Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) remains intact and united ahead of the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha byelection.
Speaking to reporters, Shylla expressed confidence in the UDP’s preparations for the election and said the party is fully committed to contesting the seat. He called upon party workers and supporters to work harder on the ground to ensure victory for the UDP candidate, senior advocate Vivanstone Kharngapkynta.
Shylla said every political party is working for its own candidate and the UDP is no exception. He emphasized that party members and supporters should remain confident and continue strengthening the party’s outreach among the people.
The Khliehriat legislator said that while he remains focused on serving his constituency, he will also campaign beyond Khliehriat to garner support for the UDP candidate.
Highlighting the importance of unity within the RDA, Shylla noted that the alliance consists of 12 UDP legislators and two HSPDP legislators. He said that if all members work together wholeheartedly, the alliance has a strong chance of securing victory in the byelection.
“There is no doubt that the HSPDP remains a part of the RDA. We have always maintained that we are united, and united we remain. The recent discussions may have been between the presidents of the parties, but I firmly believe the RDA will continue,” Shylla said.
Responding to the recent resignation of former Shillong Lok Sabha candidate Robertjune Kharjahrin from the UDP, Shylla described it as a personal decision and said the party should not be blamed for his departure.
According to Shylla, every individual has the right to make personal decisions, and Kharjahrin’s resignation should be viewed in that context rather than as a reflection of any issue within the party.
The UDP leader also defended the unity of the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government, stating that cooperation among alliance partners demonstrates the strength and stability of the coalition.
He said that any division within the MDA would weaken the government, whereas continued cooperation among the alliance partners reflects a strong and united coalition committed to serving the people of Meghalaya.
Shylla reiterated that he holds no grievance against Robertjune Kharjahrin and respects his decision, while maintaining that the UDP, RDA and MDA remain united and focused on the upcoming electoral challenge.
