NONGPOH: Two legislators from Ri-Bhoi district, Nongpoh MLA Mayral Born Syiem and Umsning MLA Dr. Celestine Lyngdoh, held a meeting with district authorities, officials of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) and the Nongpoh Town Committee on Friday to discuss measures to improve public safety along the National Highway.
The meeting, chaired by Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Dr. Abhishek Saini, was held at the DRDA Hall in Nongpoh and focused on identifying key locations in Nongpoh and Umsning where additional footbridges could be constructed to make road crossings safer and more convenient for pedestrians.
The participants also highlighted the need to expedite the construction of footbridges that have already been planned, particularly to reduce risks faced by people crossing the busy highway.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, the two MLAs said the discussions were part of ongoing efforts to review development works and address public safety concerns along the National Highway.
Apart from the proposed footbridges, the meeting also discussed measures to prevent flooding, clean drainage channels, install streetlights along the highway and extend the service road beyond its current endpoint at Mawdiangum village up to Mawtnum village.
To assess ground conditions and determine the locations requiring urgent improvements, the meeting decided to conduct a joint inspection on October 19.
The inspection is expected to help identify priority areas and ensure that the proposed infrastructure improvements address the safety needs of residents and other road users in the Nongpoh and Umsning areas.
