SHILLONG : In a move aimed at ensuring the safety of daily commuters in Shillong, traffic police from Rynjah Police Station, along with members of the Synjuk Ki Nongñiah Kali Sor bad Khap Sor (Taxi Drivers’ Union), conducted a checking drive on taxi drivers at Nongmynsong Wahheh on Monday.
The special drive was carried out to detect whether taxi drivers were operating their vehicles under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicating substances, which could pose serious risks to passengers and the general public.
Speaking to the media, Bah Denzil Nongkynrieh stated that the checking drive was initiated following complaints from the public regarding certain commercial vehicle drivers allegedly driving while intoxicated during working hours, thereby endangering passengers’ lives.
He said that in order to ensure the safe movement of commuters, all commercial vehicles passing through the area were thoroughly checked during the operation.
Bah Nongkynrieh added that no taxi drivers were found to be under the influence of alcohol or intoxicants during the checking, which reflects a positive step towards ensuring commuter safety in the city.
