SHILLONG : Police are preparing to deploy additional forces from across Meghalaya to ensure peaceful and secure Durga Puja celebrations in Shillong, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said on Monday.

Syiem assured that adequate security arrangements would be made at all locations where festivities are held, with additional personnel being requisitioned to strengthen the existing deployment.

“We have asked for additional police deployment and adequate police deployment and security will be ensured in every place,” he said.

The SP said the final deployment plan was still being prepared, as the police continued to assess the number of personnel required.

“As of now, it has not been finalized how much force will be required. We are still working on it, we still have some time. Additional force is being asked and we will review the situation from time to time,” Syiem said.

He clarified that, apart from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel already deployed, the additional forces being sought at this stage would be drawn from the state police.

As part of preparations, sector officers have already held consultations with Durga Puja committees and other stakeholders to coordinate security arrangements and ensure the smooth conduct of the celebrations.

Police have also issued advisories directing puja committees to install CCTV cameras at pandals, comply with fire safety requirements and implement proper crowd management measures. Special attention is being given to preventing incidents involving missing children and avoiding accidents during the festivities.

Syiem said puja committees had been urged to deploy volunteers to assist visitors and manage crowds, particularly at busy locations.

These volunteers will receive support from the Shillong Traffic Police at major Durga Puja pandals and other strategic points to help maintain order and ensure smoother traffic movement throughout the celebrations.
