SHILLONG : The Meghalaya Cabinet has approved the allotment of 50 acres of government land at Mawkhanu to St. Xavier’s University for the establishment of its Shillong campus, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced on Wednesday.
Speaking after the Cabinet meeting, the Chief Minister said the decision followed detailed discussions and aligns with the government’s vision of strengthening higher education in Meghalaya.
According to Sangma, St. Xavier’s University had requested 100 acres of land to set up its campus. After considering the proposal, the Cabinet decided to allot 50 acres at a highly concessional rate of Rs 1 lakh per hectare.
“This is being done because St. Xavier’s is a premier institution. It is an investment in our youth and future generations,” the Chief Minister said.
He expressed confidence that the arrival of a nationally and internationally reputed institution would significantly boost higher and technical education while creating new opportunities for students in Meghalaya and the Northeast.
Sangma added that the decision reflects the government’s long-term commitment to improving the education sector and providing quality educational opportunities for the youth of the state.
